We developed Howz to enable older people to live independently for longer.

The key to ageing well is to stay ahead of the game by spotting changes early and taking positive action.  With smart use of electricity data Howz can help millions of Americans achieve the goal of independence for longer.

Our data science has been developed collaboratively with experienced clinicians and older people.  We have identified key indicators to reflect wellbeing and detect meaningful change. We can achieve this at a basic level with smart meter data alone which would allow the utility company to offer this service to its customers as part of their standard offering.  Electricity usage viewed differently, using energy to support older people living independently, enabling older people to share their information with their families without any intrusion from sensors.

Howz in the USA

We are currently testing our Smart Home Kit with the Public Service Company of Oklahoma, a subsidiary of AEP.  They are helping us develop the right starting point for US homes, and the right language to use in our support materials.

Howz Smart Home

We use off the shelf suppliers which means we can work with local manufacturers across the world and add in new sensors from a range of suppliers.  We always look for the following key elements for our customers:

  • Easy to install and change location of sensors – no wires or screws necessary

  • Easy access to change batteries especially with arthritic fingers

  • No pairing of sensors and gateways on site – ready to go from the box

  • Good looking sensors!

How Howz works

Howz uses information from sensors in the home to learn daily routine and then detect change in that routine at the earliest opportunity.  The information is shared with the individual and their family via an app and web-portal and is designed to enable older people to live independently for longer.

The key to good outcomes is early detection of change and providing that information to the individual to take action early.

Howz uses machine learning and advanced mathematics to set normal parameters with no input from the individual.

Howz provides reassurance for them and their families without being obtrusive.
