Howz partners with Dementia Research Institute and Imperial College on new MinderCare project

London, 27 February 2025

Howz is delighted to announce its involvement in Minder Digitally Enabled Care for People with Dementia (MinderCare), a new programme designed to help people with dementia live independently. Led by the UK Dementia Research Institute in partnership with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, MinderCare is a LifeArc-funded study that tracks daily routines and gathers critical insights to enhance wellbeing.

The study builds on a long-standing collaboration between Howz, DRI, and Imperial College. Over the past decade, this partnership has worked with Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to develop a robust body of research validating the effectiveness of remote monitoring in dementia care.

MinderCare will utilise Howz technology, integrating discreet sensors and medical devices to monitor movement, activity, sleep, and overall health at home. By detecting changes that may indicate emerging health risks—such as infections or unusual movement patterns—the system provides healthcare professionals with valuable insights, enabling timely interventions and support. The study aims to validate that these benefits can be effectively delivered at scale.

The study will involve approximately 100 individuals aged 50 and over with a confirmed or suspected dementia diagnosis, along with their caregivers. Additionally, up to 50 healthcare professionals will participate in qualitative research to assess the system’s acceptability. Participants will have internet-enabled devices installed in their homes, with the MinderCare team providing technical support and monitoring their health over a 6- to 12-month period.

By testing the accuracy and reliability of early warning alerts, the study will evaluate whether the MinderCare system could become a mainstream service for dementia care. The goal is to empower healthcare professionals with actionable insights, ultimately improving the quality of life for people with dementia and their caregivers.

Howz is proud to contribute to this vital research and to continue developing innovative solutions that enable safe, independent living. We believe that understanding an individual’s pattern of life is key to maintaining independence—allowing timely support without compromising personal autonomy.
