No. Howz learns your routine and will suggest alert settings that work for you and your family. If you want them adjusted, just let us know. We'll make this possible through the app soon.
Yes. Howz has been designed as a simple self-install system. The sensors are all wireless and are attached with adhesive pads supplied with your kit. Once these are all set up, all you need to do is create an account on my.howz.com. and set up who you want your alerts sent to. We're on hand to give advice over the phone if you need more help. If self-installation isn’t possible, please call us on 0161 226 5353 and we can discuss other options.
We strongly believe that if you're going to have internet connection you should be able to make the best use of it. Many providers will add the price of the internet connection to the monthly fee, but at Howz we think there's a better way. You're free to get the best deal you can from an internet provider and then use it for more than Howz. We suggest using this comparison site for the best deal for you.
Video calling is an excellent way to stay in touch and feel closer than a phone call and grandchildren are much more likely to visit if they have access to Wi-Fi!
We designed Howz to detect human behaviour so we look for devices that indicate someone has got up and used them. TVs, chargers, lamps etc are often switched on and left on for long periods of time, or can even be on a timer.
You can edit these on our website via 'Settings and routine alerts'. We welcome feedback on the settings, especially if you don't agree – it helps us learn and improve for the future.
The most common reason is that the battery is failing or the power is switched off on the socket. If this happens when you're setting up your system, it may be that it hasn't picked up your sensor. Check the batteries (and that the power is on) and then press the circle on top of the gateway. The sensor should flash red as the system picks it up, then it will stop. Your sensor should now appear as active. With the smart plug, make sure the small button on the left side of the plug is on (it will show a green light).
We recommend you leave it on at all times in order to provide reassurance at the start of the day.
Yes, but the motion sensor works best at head height. The door sensor only records change when fully closed or opened, so if you're using it on an internal door, be sure it's a door that gets fully closed. Don't forget to rename the sensor if you move it to help with system accuracy and ensure your information is easy to understand.
The home screen will tell you if any sensors are not working or if we are having any system issues. Otherwise, you can assume all is well!
Yes, Howz will not affect your pendant alarm, in fact the two can work very well together.
We offer a 30 day free trial during which time you can return the kit and cancel your monthly subscription. After 30 days you can cancel your monthly payment at any time.
Yes. You can relocate the sensors and gateway at any time. Please update the town on your settings to help with system accuracy.
Yes. Contact us to help you reset the system making it available and appropriate for the new user. The new user will need to set up a new subscription to the Howz service. Once that's set up, the system can be used. We'll help you through this entire process.
Howz recognises the need to work with other organisations who care about people to spread the word about Howz and develop the service. EDF Energy wanted to provide a service to support people to live independently. Together they've developed and tested a robust service offering to be proud of.
Not at all. Anyone can buy Howz, but you will be purchasing the Howz Smart Home Kit from EDF Energy with the subsequent service purchased directly from Howz.

Falls detection is something we discuss a lot at Howz and it is a question often raised. Howz will detect lack of movement that doesn't fit with normal routine. This may detect if someone has been immobile for a longer than expected time, but not whether or not that is due to a fall. If you are very concerned about falls it is recommended that you seek out a specific falls detection device. The best place to start for this is often the local authority or try the local housing association.
We are sorry, but at the present time you can only set up one site on the mobile app. To add other sites to the same email address please log into https://my.howz.com with your app credentials, select 'Sites', and then 'Create site'. You will then be taken through the set up process to add a new site. Simply select your default site to show your preferred site on the app. We are working to bring multi-site viewing to the app as soon as possible.
